Wedding Rings- Settle For A Titanium Or Tungsten

April 1st, 2010 Nels No comments

Wedding Rings

Titanium and Tungsten just gained their popularity in the market a decade ago. Way back some years , only the gold and platinum rings are in the height of popularity. They are mostly worn by the royalties and those would could afford to have them. But as the years went by, many ordinary people had able to wear wedding rings in their weddings but they are not made of gold metal but in titanium and tungsten. These kind of wedding rings had gained their popularity  and became an integral fashion of the jewelry market. They may have similarity in characteristic but there are still differences in some properties. So, before purchasing tungsten or titanium wedding rings , you should first consider their characteristics so that you could decide which is more appropriate for you.

In terms of hardness, both metals are known to be harder compared to gold and even to platinum. It is not the metal itself that gives a hardness property but the alloys within them. Generally, the carbide of tungsten is known to be harder than titanium alloys. And you can cause damage to those metals by abrasions on diamonds. Since that titanium is lighter than tungsten, it that means it has a lower density. In fact,  titanium alloys are about 43% lighter than stainless steel and tungsten carbide is about 90% heavier than stainless steel.

Another difference is the hypoallergenic factor. Titanium wedding rings are mostly favored by people who have skin allergies towards the other metal. That is why, many people choose titanium metal instead of the silver one. Some tungsten wedding rings have cobalt in it that may be the cause of some skin irritations. But there are some tungsten alloys have a nickel that is also hypoallergenic. However, titanium is still the safest option of the allergic people.

Tungsten is less ductile as compared to a titanium in the common alloys that are used in wedding rings. It means that when a certain titanium ring  is under the high pressure, let’s say it is being hit by a strong heavy objects, it is likely to bend. But if that will happen to the tungsten ring, it would surely broken into pieces.  Logically thinking, tungsten wedding rings are safer to wear.

There is also a difference between the titanium wedding rings and tungsten wedding rings in term of coloration. Titanium could react in the presence of different kinds of chemicals. This reaction could produce alloys with different colors. Most jewelers use some method to put colored patterns on titanium. The most common and usual color of titanium rings are gray and black and tungsten carbide  is usually displayed in its black appearance. That is why they are both favored by most men.

If you want plain and simple wedding rings, you could better choose a pair of  tungsten bands. But if you want more personalize and with engraving, you could settle for a titanium ring. Tungsten is harder than a titanium so it is very hard to personalize . You can also put engraving but the messages would be difficult to read.

With these comparisons, you might have already your choice of an ideal metal for your rings. Just be careful and select the better one for you.

In these economic times, more and more couples are seeking ways to reduce the wedding day bill. Selecting wedding rings that cost a little less is probably going to be a consideration for most brides and grooms. Read on for some handy hints on purchasing less expensive wedding rings.

The traditional wedding ring may sometimes be the least expensive. That simple gold band that generations before us wore to symbolize their betrothal can be an inexpensive and simple solution. The simple wedding ring has a lot of benefits including the fact that it will go with almost any style of engagement ring and is impossible to date.

Another benefit to a simple wedding ring is that down the track when the bank balance is a little more healthy, you can always have stones added for a little more bling.

For those couples who have platinum taste, but a silver budget, other metals such as white gold and palladium will give the luxy platinum look without the accompanying price tag.Titanium is another less expensive wedding ring metal.

When looking at wedding rings, be sure to stay within your allocated budget. Otherwise you are bound to see the wedding rings of your dreams at a price that you are not comfortable with.

To obtain the best priced engagement rings and wedding rings, a little research will have to be done. Visit a few jewelers and see which metals you prefer and what width band you are after. Do you want a domed band or a flat band? Would you prefer a wider wedding ring or a narrower band? The more metal, or the heavier the ring, the higher the price tag will be. Although, your wedding ring will look more finished if you ensure that it is the same width as your engagement ring.

Once you have narrowed your selection down, it will be a matter of searching the Net and jewelry stores for the best possible price. Don’t forget that in many parts of the globe various times of the year are well known for jewelry sales. End of financial year sales are always a great time for reaping the benefits of a sale.

Don’t  leave purchasing the wedding rings until the last moment. Take advantage of jewelry sales to secure yourself the best possible price. If you are having your wedding in a traditionally popular time of year, such as spring or summer, it may well be worth your while to obtain your wedding rings in the off wedding season, often winter.

Inexpensive wedding rings need not look inexpensive or flimsy. In fact, a simple and inexpensive wedding ring without any stones or working to add to the price can be a substantial item in its own right.

Always ensure that the wedding ring has a maker’s mark or hallmark stamped on it. This is your guarantee that the wedding ring is manufactured from the metal that you are paying for.

Inexpensive wedding rings are just as much a statement of love and commitment as a diamond encrusted designer wedding ring. There are many wedding ring metals to select from and these offer a wide range of wedding ring prices.

Ceramic Wedding Rings

One of the newest wedding ring trends to hit the market are ceramic wedding rings. Now, while you may read or hear “ceramic” and think of a plate or cup smashing, nothing could be further from the truth. A ceramic wedding ring is not breakable like glass jewelry. In fact, it is the virtual indestructibility of ceramic wedding rings that is making them so popular. Is a ceramic wedding ring for you? Read on.

What is a ceramic wedding ring? Ceramic wedding rings are made from a combination of powdered pure ceramic materials and zirconium, which is then heated to more than 6000°, resulting in  a molten liquid. The liquid is shaped, cut, cooled, and then polished into a ring. Ceramic wedding rings are harder than titanium, and almost as hard as a tungsten carbide wedding ring.

This is great news for those unfortunate folk who have contact allergies to metals.

A ceramic wedding ring is going to gleam just as well in the years to come, as it did when it went on your finger.

* Will never fade. While some other colored and treated wedding rings may fade in color, a ceramic wedding ring won’t. This is especially significant  for those who want a black wedding ring.

* Weighs less than a tungsten wedding ring, but is heavier than a titanium wedding ring.

* Unscratchable. The color of a ceramic wedding ring is solid and contained the whole way through the ring. The final color is not an industrial coating of black or white covering a different colored metal underneath, as in some titanium wedding rings. Those who have active lifestyles, jobs, or hobbies may be reassured to know that ceramic wedding rings are pretty much unscratchable.

* Will not change color. Tungsten wedding rings that are made with a cobalt alloy instead of carbon, can oxidise and change color, this will never happen with a ceramic wedding ring.

* Will not craze.

* Range of colors. Apart from black and white, there are plenty of other contemporary colors to select from, including pinks and blues.

* Many styles or ceramic wedding rings to select from. Ceramic wedding rings can also be incorporated with other ingredients. A ceramic wedding ring can have metallic stripes (such as gold or tungsten) running through it, can be inlaid with diamonds, or engraved with various designs and patterns. Ceramic wedding rings can also be faceted, grooved, or bevelled, for those who are seeking a wedding ring that is more ornate.

* Hypo-allergenic. Ceramic wedding rings are not going to result in a nasty red rash for those who have problems with contact dermatitis. A ceramic wedding ring is inert and contains no ingredients to react with sensitive skin.

* Contemporary looking. Ceramic wedding rings are extremely modern looking and are an ideal choice for those who are after something a little newer than a traditional metallic wedding ring.

Drawbacks

* Can’t be re-sized. Ceramic wedding rings cannot be re-sized or altered once they have been made. If your finger size should fluctuate dramatically, then this may not be the best wedding ring option for you.

* Slower to remove in an emergency. Much the same as tungsten carbide wedding rings, a ceramic wedding ring cannot be removed with standard ring cutters. However, they can be removed using pliers and force, it will just take a little longer. Those selecting ceramic wedding rings should probably get their jeweler to educate them as to how to remove their ring in the case of an emergency. Alternatively, remove the ceramic wedding ring prior to hazardous activities involving machinery.

Ceramic wedding rings or even engagement rings can be the ideal choice for those who are after a contemporary colored wedding ring that will not fade, discolor, lose its luster, or scratch.
